1984 is a difficult book like i was saying earlier. I think the most confusing part of it is the fact that it goes from topic to topic...and it keeps jumping around, which is kind of hard to follow. At this point, I'm not really INTO the book yet. It still is kinda boring. Winston's life almost doesn't make sense because their world (the future) is so unordinary! I don't think the author was really picturing the future, because what he illustrates is like a dictatorship. The style of government is outdated (although it may not have been then) but still, who would want a government like that?!? Even with our government today, which is supposably a democracy, if you think about it, the presdient really makes a lot of the decisions. All the people in the country/city/stateish thing Oceania are completely brainwashed, and none of the people have minds of their own! I think its pretty sad that a government would try to do that, although it does make sense because they want the people to agree and not rebel. If you read the back of the book, it makes it seem like it will be all likes spookey and stuff, but its really not. So far, I'm actually kinda disappointed with it. Also, the whole idea with "Big Brother" is completely unfair to all of the people living in their area! How can the government think that everyone is happy??? No matter what you do, someone is obviously going to disagree. The whole telescreen thing is just wrong too. It's like anyone can see what you are doing at any time. Today, that would be completely illegal. It's also very, very unrealistic, because it would be almost impossible to put "telescreens" everywhere. People also could not put "hidden microphones" in trees and fences and such, as it says in the next few pages. That is completely untrusting, and if I lived there I would totally rebel! That, once agian, is totally not fair to the people! The government is actually supposed to serve the people, not spy on them, and not trust anything they do. Without government, our country would be completely crumbling, but it would still be alive, same with there's, but i think that they would actually be better off.
The way that the people of Oceania are living is unbearable, and to me, untolerable. It's almost like a dog cringing in fear that a perosn will slap it or something, but here, the people are completely scared of their own government, and frankly, scared to live in Oceania. That's really, really sad. I would completely get a bunch of people to come and start a riot or something (JK! Haha i wouldnt do that...) Winston obviously disapproves of the government, and if he really wanted to, he could get a group of people together and they could all make a motion against the government! "Big Brother" (if he exists, especially because no one has seen him) couldn't "vaporize" them because that would completely kill "his" society and his country.
The book 1984 almost sounds like it was written BACK in time, rather in the future. I mean, these people were smart, even if the book was written in 1949 (year?), these people should have some idea that people cannot really "vanish" and everything. The kind of government is soooo old, and i dont think that it will happen again, just because it DOESN'T WORK. Basically, the book sounds like it was written for 1949 (or earlier!) as the future...(no offense or anything to the book......)
